Depends on what brand you want.
For most brands, try www.newegg.com to start. They ship fast and inexpensively and have an enormous selection of laptops.
From there, Dells have been proven time and time again to be great laptops for most purposes. Avoid the XPS range unless you want to play video games on the go.
eBay and Amazon are iffy. The sellers might not take as much care as a full, established company would with your laptop.
Also try just Best Buy or Circuit City; their selection is adequate with reasonable prices. But don't do shipping; save by doing in-store pickup if you can.

I've been looking for one myself recently.
If you're willing to put in the effort, search through eBay and look at many auctions in detail. If you bid, you can snap up a real bargain! There are also great deals going with buy-it-now prices, and some accept offers.
I got a top of the range spec laptop for just £320 on ebay, by making a 'best offer'.
The only thing to bare in mind is you do not necessarily get warranty or any kind of customer services when buying on eBay. Choose your seller carefully!
Other suggestions are www.savastore.com, www.ebuyer.com, www.dabs.com, and other websites. Try a price searching website such as www.kelkoo.co.uk. There are a few bargains in the January sales already!

http://www.newegg.com has very low prices on different brands of laptops. They are like the walmart of online computer stuff. Good store.
Also try http://www.techbargains.com and look for deals on laptops. Techbargains is just a website people can talk about bargains they found online. A lot of times they tell about tricks for Dell.com that will let you get things cheaper than you normally would. (secret free upgrades and such)

www.stupidcheapcomputers.net They sell professional-grade systems for less than most places sell consumer-grade crap. Plus, their service is outstanding.
I have bought 5 systems from them (so far) and they have always exceeded my expectations.
