Well, "Liberal" is a very wide definition.

In modern American culture, it refers to someone, usually a Democrat or of a Third Party, who pushes for more government reform. They are, traditionally, a supporter of the "blue-collar man" and the small business owner. It is the opposite of a "Conservative," who usually believes in traditional values and is content with how the government is.

Still, there are things such as "Liberal republicans," where they are someone who is overall conservative, but takes a bit more of a liberal stance on traditional themes in politics.

So it's very broad.

You can be a liberal a conservative or somewhere inbetween (a moderate).
Liberals are loose, that is the easiest way to remember them. They are loose on laws. They believe women choose when it comes to their bodies (like abortion), pot is ok (and may be legalized), softer on criminals (no death penalty), no big government (less of Washington tell you what to do), less laws over-all (people govern themselves) and more. I am sure you get the picture.
Conservatives are stricter. No drugs, no stem cell research, no abortion, more laws, tougher laws, death penalty, big governement (Washington knows best), and more.

Moderates can be any where in between. Not too conservative and not too liberal. Many times you hear the conservatives being the right and the liberals being the left (parties and politics).
Where do you fit in?

A liberal is a person who usually embraces something new; e.g. stem cell research, or abortion (or right to choose). Just the opposite of a conservative who prefers to keep things as they are. I think the majority of Americans are conservative when it comes to issues involving morality. democrats are not all liberal; many are moderate but the party's platform is liberal.

I am a Liberal, and I think it means different things to different people. As for my own beliefs I don't have the space, or the time to get into them. Plus i would probably get a violation from someone that disagreed with my stance.

The difference between Liberals and Conservatives is very simple.

Liberals believe in the most possible equality between a society's members.

Conservatives believe that inequality between a society's members is natural, and should not be interfered with.

old style liberals were those that favored more freedom in the personal and economic arenas. They were labeled whigs and anarcho-capitalists and libertarians.
Today's liberals favor a secular govt., immigration, are pro-environment, and believe in more governmental control in economic areas.
Other names for liberals include left-wingers.

1. Opposite of a conservative.

2. Wants more taxes and government control over our lives.

3. Believes the government was behind 9-11

4. Is only concerned with intentions not results. It is great that liberals try and wipe out poverty, never mind that it does not work.

The best way to really learn about liberalism is to listen to Rush Limbaugh. He offers parts of that days show for free on his website. You will learn the fastest from him. Listen to what he says and watch people in the real world.
