Just get in a quiet spot, say we've been friends for so long, and I think we should move our friendship a little bit farther if you would like. And if he says its OK, then go for it! Good for you! If he says no, don't be embaressed! Just say, "OK, we probably need a little more time; or just a little more touching up! Getting to know each other a little more!" And maybe give some tips on what each other need to work on. :)
