+ They advertise and you show up and then they will pick who they want., but you might want to beat them to it and call the major movie producers or studios and ask.

Not sure about San Diego but In Sydney you sign up with a reputable talent agency. It costs abut $300 to have photos taken which they send out to clients. If you have the right look they will ask the agency to contact you. Sometimes a Tv casting exec. will ask for several blondes, redheads,etc. or ten old men, that type of thing and the agency will call you - no audition or anything you just turn up. For speaking roles they will send you for auditions but usually only if you have had some training or experience as they dont want to look bad in front of their clients if you bomb!
My duaghter got quite regular extra work on several local productionsa as well as ads. The pay is very good - I say go for it!

in most newspapers there are listings for extras or people to work on sets and things of that nature... if you cant become an extra right away your best bet would try to work your way up..... or maybe get some contact names of people in the business

Sometimes in the newspaper they have casting calls. You should also contact local casting agencies.
