Okay, so I have a brand new Sony VAIO laptop with Windows XP home edition and my printer/scanner/copier came with Arcsoft plus I have Microsoft Works of course, would any of these programs do this? Otherwise, what might the program be called on my computer?

with efax, just sign up with them, and you will get a number right-a-way! and its free...the only difference is the area code is a Chicago one, but I never cared about that...to send a fax...use your scanner...I have all faxes send to me via email...so I can print them out only if I need to...

Usually the software that enables you to use your scanner as a fax comes with the scanner. I know that the HP scanners have several buttons that can be pressed that informs the computer what the image is for. Pictures, email, or fax.

You computer also has the ability to behave as a fax. You can go to your control panel and add a printer/fax and configure the output to be a fax. Anything you printed to this icon would go out as a fax. This usually requires your phone modem to connected to you telephone service.

There are 2 ways to do this:
1. If you have a modem in your computer it probably came with fax software. Use that.

2. If you don't, or don't want to follow #1, you would have to use a service to send the fax for you. You can search "fax service" to find them, but eFax.com is probably the oldest and biggest.

yes it is simple....
are you on windows xp?
if you are then setup the fax ( all the fax is, is a printer driver)

next you would type your message in word Insert the picture into the document and then select print But instead of your normal printer you would select the fax printer, then a dial pad would pop up and you would dial the name and number you wan't and on the answer you would press send

1 Yes go to program/accessories /communications /fax
2 If that feature is not available, then you will need to go to control panel /add/remove programs, click on windows programs /accessories and check the box by fax. then you will have to redo the first step
As previously stated you have to have a modem to connect dirctly to your phone line
