My modem is a 56k with an average 42k connection and I have Free Download Manager and Megaupload's program, but neither give me much more than 4k on most downloads. When I uploaded some of my files to Megaupload, I got up to a 25k speed, and when downloading to test if the files were uploaded correctly, I got a similar download speed to the upload speed. Occasionally I'll get a 10k speed, but this is only on some servers. On FDM, I get the same speed when it splits into 10 parts, or doesn't split at all. The program only downloads one split piece at a time. Is there any way I can maximize my download speed or am I stuck until I got to college where they have dsl in the dorms?

I think you are confusing units of measure here. A 56k modem is 56 kilobits per second. When you are downloading files with the Free Download Manager or any other program, it reports the speed in kilobytes. These are different. If you are connected to the internet at 56 kilobits per second, (actually the max is 53.3), the most kilobytes per second you can download at is roughly 6.6.

If any programs report they are transferring data faster than 6.6 kilobytes per second, it is because the files you are transferring are being compressed at the low-level network systems between your modem and the other system. For example, when sending a bitmap file over AIM using a 56k modem, you can sometimes hit speeds of almost 100kbps because the bitmap is being compressed on the fly. But in reality, the actual amount of data flowing between you and the other system is still only 6.6.

FYI, most colleges don't have DSL in the dorms. DSL is a specific kind of broadband connection that runs over phone lines, it is for small businesses and homes. College dorms have very big internet connections like T3's or OC12's. Just call it broadband.

So, to answer your question, you can't. Dial-up is what it is, that's all there is to it. You can't make a highway carry more cars without building more capacity.

yeah, you're kinda stuck in that range. you can try cleaning up your computer, etc, but it wont help that much. DSL isn't that expensive though...I think it's around the $20-range/month from ATT Yahoo. I'm using DSL and it is ligtening fast for me lol. Good luck with the 56k modem though!

Make sure no programs or non-essential processes are running, that could help, otherwise you're hosed.

Upgrade to broadband is the only way - so yes - you're stuck.
