Look for prefixes, suffixes, and compound words. Also, try making words from existing words.

1) Know your two-letter words. There are 101 legal 2 letter words in North American Play, and knowing them form the basis for a good portion of plays.

2) Know your 3 Letter words. There are 1015 legal 3's.

3) Use your power tiles and find the "Hot Spots". Look for plays that place High point tiles (JQXZ) on the Double Letter and Triple letter squares. There are quite a few places on the board where you can plunk down a 5 letter word and cover 2 bonus squares.

4) Manage your rack - keep it bingo friendly. Having a good mix of consonants and vowels on your rack is key to making the 7-letter plays. Keeping Bingo Prone tiles will have you find words more easily. S, A, T, I, N, E, L, and R are good tiles to have on your rack. Try not to have repeating letters (like 2 T's or 2 O's), because that makes it more difficult to find 7 letter words. Remember - playing all 7 of your tiles gives you an extra 50 points after your score is totaled.

5) Improve your word knowledge. In tournament play, you don't need to know what the word means, you just need to know that it's spelled correctly. And when you are playing against other people of your own cailber, it'll all boil down to who has the better vocabulary.

Basically, look for high scoring words, look for plays that cover hot spots, and most importantly - HAVE FUN!

Try to create more words by laying the tiles parallel to the ones already on the board. If you can do this, you can create several words in one turn and get lots of points.

'Qat'. A Q and no U? Look it up. It's an alternate spelling of "Khat", a leaf drug similar to cocaine.
