You are right that agar is required for bacteria to grow on it. It basically provides the necessary nutrient and the surface for the bacteria to grow. Nothing fantastic about agar.

agar is a type of nutrient in which it allows microorganisms to grow on. it is the microorganisms' food. it is made from red algae, or seaweed. there are may types of agar. there are selective media, and there are differential media. or there are general purpose media. different types of agars are: Nutrient agar (NA), TGEA, VRBA, MacConkey, starch agar (SA), TSA, ect.

each of these agar has a different purpose. thus, it is depend on what types of agar you are asking.

it is a gelatinous substance. It is like starch so it is full of carbon needed by bacteria to live.
