I have a 19" flatscreen that I just got for christmas, I thought it would be better for my eyes than the old big screens. but it seems this screen is much brighter. Is the one I have now, better for my eyes?

If it's too bright, simply reduce the brightness on the screen itself. That's what I've done.

LCD's are a ton better. A lot of companies are switching from the bulky CRT's because they are hurting people's eyes with the refresh rates and causing vision insurance to go up.

The radiation (not nuclear!) from CRT's will cause your eyes to dry out much more that LCD's will, so yes LCD's are much better. If you had an older CRT, it's probable that it was getting weaker/dimmer, making the new one seem that much brighter, when the CRT would have been that bright when it was new.
