The best way to reduce the discomfort of sore throat is to take pain meds like Tylenol or Advil (acetominofen or Ibuprofen).
Warm beverages and soups are also soothing to the throat.
Gargling with warm salt water is effective at soothing and also for helping to reduce the viral infection. Good oral hygiene when you are sick is also good -- brushing your teeth and using antiseptic mouthwash (like Listerine brand) are helpful to reduce the level of viruses in your mouth.
There are also tons of products such as throat lozenges and throat sprays that are soothing. For lozenges, I have found that the most effective active ingredient is:
hexylresorcinol
But there are not very many products that have it. Instead you will probably be able to find products containing other active ingredients.
The brand Cepacol is generally the most effective lozenges available (in the USA). Here is their website:

Right up until the day I delivered my doctor had prescribed OTC claritin (the 24hr dosage) and Chloraseptic lozenges to help with an awful cough and sore throat related to allergies. She also made benadryl available to me if I needed something with 'more punch' to help with the allergies and also fall asleep.
I was a high risk pregnancy and spent 65 days on hospitalized bedrest trying to keep from delivering too early, so that they were willing to give me those meds, I imagine they are pretty safe. They didn't to anything bad to me or the baby in my condition :)
Feel better soon!

Just Tylenol! There is nothing over the counter to help a sore throat other than chloraseptic, no matter what the package says. I may help with discomfort though.

Rest and fluids and listen to your Doc. If your sure it's not strep, call a relative have them care for your children and rest. I wouldn't take anything this late in pregnancy. Now days most newborns are drug screened, and if you take something, you might have a baby testing positive to something you'll be asked to explain...... Best wishes for a healthy baby and best of luck to you....

Usually your OB will have a list of over the counter stuff you can take.... Do they have a nurse on call? Most do. Call and ask what you can take.
