Soldiers perform a Service of Duty to their Country. You may not always agree with what You Government says or does, but You are under an obligation, as a Matter of Honor to perform to the best of Your abilities under whatever conditions or circumstances You may encounter. That is the simple answer to 'Why' the Members of the Armed Forces go where They are sent. The reason people complain is because They do not understand the nature of warfare and the 'eleemosynary' effect the U.S. of A. is having in Iraq. Pure and Simple.

The people have always complained when their soldiers have died in battle. The present campaigns being conducted in Iraq and Afghanistan, are seen by a very large number of the people, to be part of an illegal war.
In my childhood during WW2 people complained bitterly about the death toll of our soldiers, sailors and airmen. The compaints during WW-One were even louder, when tens of thousands of men died in battles, such as the Battle of the Somme.
Do not imagine for one moment that the people are companing for the first time, they are not. The people complained about the death toll at the Battle of Waterloo.
The British Army today is equal in size to what it was in the 1800s and at the time of the Battle of Waterloo. The political leadership expect our army to accomplish more than is possible for them. The British Army is both under equiped and under manned. Listen to the generals, they are telling it how it is. We cannot allow our army, the British Army to go on like this.
The political establishment are simply selling the British Army too cheap and its already causing serious recruiting problems. Most especially when politicians poke their noses in telling the British Army to cut back recruitment in traditional areas such as South Wales.
The British Army gets most of its best recruits from the Celtic Warrior Nations of Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Nothing wrong with that. The bulk of the British Army has always been English and always will be.
The people complain when their soldiers and service personnel die because they see their deaths as for nothing. Our actions in Iraq and Afghanistan will not reduce terrorist attacks, if anything, many believe it makes the situation worse.
The Muslim world is not to be messed with. Ignorance of that world is leading to much death. We need to stand back and look at the situation. We need to encourage the Muslim world to join in talks - not in war.
Afghanistan in particular has been historically, a killing field for the British Army and every campaign there by our Army has lead to thousands of deaths. Do we want this to happen again? A defeat for our Army? No we do not.
The British people have always held the former Red Army (the Russian Army) in the very highest esteem - they are seen as having a special mystique and magic on the field of battle. An army of awesome power and sustainability. Yet this, one of the worlds greatest armies, was defeated in Afghanistan. So it follows by logic and historical fact, that the same fate will befall the British Army. It is a pointless war. They do not want us and they do not want democracy.
Believe.

i kind of agree with what you are saying, but i dont think anyone else will, its not like it used to be where you HAD to go in the army, these people signed up knowing that they could be in a war and in fact be killed in that war. i do feel sorry for them, but no body made them do this

Nice to hear your exceptance of your brother possibly dying. However when talking about death it's hard not to get upset.
Solidiers join the army because they care about their country, that doesn't mean they want to be sent to war. Especailly if they personally don't believe the war is justified.
People complain because they don't think their loved ones are dying for a justified reason.

Its sad when a loved one dies, but if you join the armed forces? I can not understand the people who have left the armed forces because they will have to go to war?

People complain because they do not understand the war we are in nor war in general. Your point is right on.
Liberals do not understand free choice. Look at liberals on this site. You will see this as a common theme.

You know, I have often asked the same question. There has always been an imminent fate with joining the army and people make it like they are victims. I thought it was volountary service. I mean no disrespect with my comments. But it has often puzzled me as well

It is because of those brave men and women that you are able to sit at your terminal and have your own point of view. So a little respect and gratitude may not go a miss, maybe you should try it.

Because we hope they are in a preventative role, helping prevent violence and promote safety
Because it is always sad when someone dies, especially when someone dies to keep us safe, it is the ultimate sacrifice......

There are 5 steps to "grieving" said to be denial, anger, bargaining, depression , acceptance ( not necessarily in that order) It does sound as if you are being stressed out by the constant strain of worrying if this will happen to your brother ,and have almost started to enter this process as a way to cope with his possible impending death....
Try telling him what this has done to you, perhaps he can explain why he feels the need to do this...
