Because they think that they're the best.
That they are amazing and that we all want to be like them....
Just look at bastets_kitten's answer.
And bastets_kitten, I'll have you know that the whole "name-brand American" thing is a load of BULLSH!T.
My relatives in South America are some of the hardest-working people I have EVER met.
My uncle is only home 4 full days a week because the other 3 he's in a different city working. He COULD work in a hospital near his home but he doesn't because of the pay so he can provide for his family!

You are generic Americans. We here in the north are name-brand Americans. We live in the United States of America. When someone overseas thinks of an American, they think of us. If you were really that upset about it, why not form the United States of Central and South America?
OK, I took off the "siesta" thing because, after looking at it, it was a bit snipey, but I stand by the rest of my answer. When someone thinks of an American, they don't think of someone down in Ecuador. They think of someone in New York or Los Angeles or Chicago. That's why, when you specify, you have to say you are "South" American. The fact remains that the plain word "American" refers to persons living where I do, in the USA.

Americans are called "Americans" because they come from the United States of America.
It is not because they come from the American continents.
Just like all those from other American continent nations call themselves something related to THEIR countries also.
Now if you guys would let the USA turn you all into states, THEN you could call yourself Americans.
