Roosevelt was president in 1944, and he was White, The US has never had a black president.
Roosevelt was a popular, war-time incumbent and faced little opposition. The balloting went thusly:
* President Franklin Roosevelt 1086
* Harry F. Byrd 87
* James A. Farley 1
With Roosevelt's health deteriorating, many in the Democratic party saw incumbent vice president Henry Wallace as being too far to the left to be so close to the presidency, so Roosevelt agreed to replace him on the ticket with Missouri Senator Harry Truman.

Your facts appear to be wrong , I can find no gap in Roosevelt's presidency until his death.....
Roosevelt, Franklin Delano the 32d President of the United States was in office from 1933 until his death in office on April 12, 1945. Franklin Delano Roosevelt died suddenly from a cerebral hemorrhage. He was buried on the family estate at Hyde Park (much of which he donated to the nation).
