I would like to educate one answerer. No ,your tax dollars does not pay my salary as a postal employee. The post office is the only government agency that is off budget and not funded by the Federal Government. Where do you get your uneducated information from? Obviously you just like shooting off your mouth about something that you know absolutely nothing about. Revunes from sales of postal stamps and products funds the U.S. Postal Service. The only time the U.S. Postal Service was on budget was when Reagan put us there so he could fund his "stars wars" dream that never materialized, then you would have something to complain about. Bush was trying to put the U.S. Postal service on budget so he could supplement SSI,leaving postal customers like yourself with less service than you get now. The Postal Services's salaries are determined by Union negotiations, the only Federal Government agency that has that luxury, because we as Postal Letter Carriers fought for it.

I remember Nixon got a day, I believe it was based on presidential proclamation. I worked at the Post Office later on, and I knew it wound up being a mess because they gave carriers the day off (since there was no mail delivery), but nobody else. The unions filed grievances on it, and got everybody else a holiday of their choosing.

Maybe goverment employees dont want the day off just to have it. There is a chance they would like to go to the services.
