It's usually WAY better, mostly down to having more / better engine cleaning detergents in it than cheap supermarket petrol (why d'ya think it's so cheap). According to UK "Motoring Agony Uncle" Honest John in an article I tracked down specially for this answer "Shell and Texaco petrol traditionally had the best detergent packages, but BP Ultimate petrol now has a good one too, and Esso has also introduced a high detergent petrol. Lack of detergent and a high proportion of short runs from cold is what causes most petrol engine fuel system problems, so if you buy your petrol from a supermarket seek written assurance that it at least meets and preferably far exceeds the British Standard for detergent in petrol."

And obviously, the more detergent a fuel has, the less cr*p (usually carbon deposits) builds up inside the engine and helps it run better (e.g. fuel injector nozzles not partially blocked, etc).

The chemical constitution of all brands of gas is identical, if it were any different then it wouldn't be gas - it would be butane, propane, bitumen or something similar.

The gas refineries often supply gas to several companies so you end up with an identical product being marketed under dfferent brand names.

The difference lies in the additives that may be added although the effectiveness of most additives is questionable anyway.

Price differences tend to be the result of larger corporations having higher overheads (often advertising) which have to be recouped by increasing the price of the gas.

Name brand usually is better, but sometimes the non-name brand is from the same company as the name-brand. Some gas stations have to pay to the corporation fees for using the name like "Cheveron" or "AMPM" rather than individual companys who have the same gas but they're "Quik Mart" or whatever.

Name brand gas tends to have better cleaning agents than off-brand gas. Other than that its all the same.
