It really depends on your carrier and plan. Most charge per text that you send. I would call your provider to make sure before having fun with it.

Technically, because you are paying for a cell phone plan to use the phone in the first place, you are already paying for text messages.

On a per diem basis, certain carriers have deals or packages, for instance, that make all incoming text messages free or include a certain allowance of outgoing messages. So you may not see the charge for individual text messages although on your bill you may be paying for them in bulk.

Finally, most carriers wil charge you for outgoing text messages (or picture/video messages) that are sent over your allowance. For Verizon i get charged 10 cents per message sent over my allowance but other carriers are different.

PS. i don't know if this is still possible but when i had Sprint a while back, I could send unlimited text messages (for "free") if i used my computer and logged into their website.

Usually you have to pay either a monthly fee for unlimited messaging or a per use fee of 10 cents or so. Depends on the cell phone carrier

Unfortunately, no. The price of text messaging depends on your cell phone carrier like Cingular or T-Mobile or Verizon Wireless

It all depends on your service contract. Some include free text messages, others charge a pre-set price. Still others allow you to send "X" messages a month for free.

No its not free. A minimal charge will be charged by the service provider. Usually its a few cents. 10cents or 5cents. Some country i heard even charged 1cents per sms send, to attract more subscribers.

Nope - can generally pay by the message (most expensive), for a st number per month (mid-range price) or unlimited (cheapest if you use quite a bit)
