It is "recommended" that if a minor [someone under 18] flies alone, they require some sort of parental consent letter. Is it NEEDED? I am 16 years old.

If I do not have this letter, what are the consequences?

What are the odds of the customs officers actually catching this?

Any other information I should have about this?

I have a passport.

There have been times that I've flown without parental consent letters or anythign before, and never even been questioned. I got on the plane fine.

The customs officer was a bit fishy and asked "Do your parents know where you're going?". At the time, I was meeting them in Atlanta and so I said yes and got by fine.

If I check-in online, or at the kiosk - they will not know I am under 16, so how could they ask for a letter?

The airline probably won't let you board. If they did, the Customs will know since the passenger manifest (with dates of birth) are uploaded into the computer system as soon as the plane departs.

If it is a long flight and your parents/guardians find out they can call the FBI (assuming you are in the USA) and they would order the aircraft back. And who do you think will pay for the thousands and thousands of dollars involved in that?

If you provided false information, then you could be charged criminally!

If you are going to meet someone who you have been corresponding with over the internet DON"T DO IT!

Nothing good will come of it and the person is probably lying to you!

I've seen it too many times.

Please reconsider!

If you have a passport, it will indicate your age, and you won't be allowed to board.

If you don't have a passport, you will not be allowed to board an international flight.

That simple.
