No because young people were so well chaperoned. When my Mom was growing up in Tennessee she'd go to the spring house to get water and she'd put bugs in the pail. That way her mom would make her go get more and she would meet my dad her boyfriend there. ha If a boyfriend came calling they could only visit in the parlor with the door opened.

Hello =)
Before the "Victorian Era"....premarital sex was common enough, to be sure....The Victorians exported their hypocritical sense of morality throughout the civilized world, so, up until about 1890, when the US went through some sort of minor cultural revolution, which we now call "the gay 90's", there was not much premarital sex.
Around the turn of the 20th century, however, it became very common again, and few couples married as virgins. This continued right through to this day.
If you need proof of this, you can look at most family histories, and you can see the fact that many women, albeit unknowingly sometimes, were married already in a state of pregnancy.
It seems that, historically, once a couple was "committed" to each other, by promise, then sex was immediate.
Of course, the sexual openness that we experience today came about because of WWII, and the "sexual revolution" of the 1960's....
Namaste, and Happy Holidays,
--Tom

The sex was probably going on but people were more cautious because they would force you to marry that person you had sex with so it probably would change the way people viewed sex, not like now where people are not as worried about the consequences because there is always a way out for them.

I doubt it. I'm sure there was some, yes, and quite a bit. It was all kept quiet, because of the scandal, but it was there nonetheless. All the same, I think there's more today because of the sexual revolution in the 60's and 70's. It became okay to do, and that brought more people to do it.

I think pre-marital sex existed, but it was so UNaccepted for moral and religious reasons, that many people did not engage in it. But I do believe that there were those who defied their moral upbringings and couldn't resist themselves.

No--there was no birth control, pregnancy out of wedlock was seriously frowned upon and people had more morals.

there is nothing new under the sun---that's a quote from the bible.People are people...nothing changes...feelings, lust, sex, wars, play..relationships, families--you name it...people have always had sex one way or another--if not, a majority of us wouldn't be here.

Yeah we should set our moral standard by them they really treated women, blacks, and indians like animals but at least they didn't have premarital sex.
