in other words can i use server ram in my desktop pc, and is there anything i need to look for on my pc to see if its compatible besides the normal stuff)

No to the lasy guy, there is a difference. Server ram is generally registered RAM, also called ECC RAM. It has error-checking capabilities. It tends to be more expensive and is unnecessary for plain desktop computers.

Like the guy before said, server's usually run ECC Registered RAM which will work on very few motherboards, (the only ones I know of are the top of the line Athlon FX models which require registered memory). So it is not a good idea to use that RAM in your desktop.

Nothing. RAM is RAM is RAM. Servers tend to have a lot more RAM installed in them than your average desktop due to the increased load put on them by enterprise level activities but the actual chips aren't any different.
