They found the "conduit" by which the Borg travels so fast to other parts of the galaxy. They defeated a Borg Queen (not sure if it was supposed to be "the" Borg Queen, but she was played by Alice Krige (the same one in Star Trek First Contact)) and were able to travel in the conduit back to Earth and got back there at the end of the episode.
