I realize he was a ruthless dictator, but why did he say these positive things on the day after his conviction and death sentence?

The same reason anyone who is sentenced to death says things like that, sympathy.Too little too late. He has been treated far more fairly than the literally hundreds of thousands of people he had executed.

I think Saddam has known from the opening salvos of 'Shock and Awe,' that he was doomed.

Knowing that, he must inevitably turn his mind to the judgement of history. He's going to die, how will he be remembered? Given the debacle of the US 'liberation' of Iraq, how fitting is it, that the man the USA deposed calls for peace and unification at the steps of the gallows, as it were?

Who knows, he may actually mean it.

His statements are contradictory at best. He probably thinks what he said about not hating etc. will give his supporters more cause to treat him as a martyr.

Beleive only what you here directly from somebody and what you see whith your own eyes. All evil people who can kill others directly or through somebody else should be punished. What is the meaning of the word - murder............and why some of these "people" still walking around...........money and power making people sick and turning many people into murders in general............................

Saddam knows that not only is he being judged by a court of his peers, but he's fixing to be judged by God. Hopefully, he's repenting for the 100's of 1000's that he's ruthlessly murdered. He's evil, but he's not stupid.

He is making on last stand to try and immortalize himself. Plus, he wants his followers to see his passion and compassion and to continue to cause chaos in the region and the world.

hahhaa

but seriously, Saddam has a history of talking big and then getting himself in too deep... and then trying to talk his way out of it when he gets caught...

It means he is making a desperate attempt for sympathy. Too little too late IMHO.
