Well for me it is more than just being gentle. It come with age and wisdom and respect. A true gentleman demands respect without asking for it. It just seems to come his way. That comes from his confidence and personality. In a younger man it comes across as arrogance for how could a young man be worldly? But that is a generalization. Some young men have that quality and some older men never get it!

I agree with you-age should have no bearing on whether a man is seen as a gentleman or not. The phrase "older gentleman" seems to have become an idiom.

good question. When i think of a gentleman i always think of someone with good manners. I would guess you hear older gentlemen more because younger men don't have that good of manners.
It's kind of the same thing with Lady...

Hello =)
Gentleman is a title of respect, generally. It has nothing to do with "gentle", but actually is a bastardization of the word "genteel"...meaning well-mannered, gracious, pleasant, generous, and so forth.....
So, one hears the phrase "older gentleman", as a term of respect, out of a lingering sentiment that we are all taught as children, to respect your elders....... I hear the phrase in regards to myself more and more, and I think it quite funny....
I have used the phrase "young gentleman" many times in my life, referring to customers of mine. As in "can someone please help this young gentleman and his lady??" When my salespeople were daydreaming....LOL And then, too, it was an offering of respect.
But please know, that it has nothing to do with a man being "Gentle".... If you want to say that, you say "gentle man" not "Gentleman"...
Namaste,

Your absolutely right but I tend to say that also. Mostly because saying "older gentleman" sounds better than saying "old man". lol

Yes; I just think people assume that with age comes wisdom and a better ability to understand the opposite sex; but I've met some very fine young gentlemen!
