People can be shy because they have no friends, they are not fond of talking, or because they have a low self esteem. I used to be shy but then I found out that it doesn't matter what people think of me and that I can just be myself. Now I am much more bubbly and outgoing.l

I used to be really shy growing up as a child. I think a major part of it was because people are generally very judgmental and all people are self-conscience. I guess it is mainly because some people don't want to look bad in front of strangers or something..luckily, shyness is something I grew out of.

Self confidence, or lack of for one. Another is one's upbringing.
I was super shy growing up. For me, I had things happen to me that should never happen to a child and that was part of it. I lacked self confidence also because of it. Some people are just afraid of what others will think, but that is a confidence thing too.
We all need love in our lives growing up. We need strong roll models, who can show how to deal with certain emotions when we deal with things as we grow. That would help. I never knew how to express my emotions then. I enternalized them.
I am a stronger person as I grew. I learned and I am a good person now and I can see how to help others in a positive way.

Often bad experiences in social settings can make people shy, like being made fun of or doing/saying something embarrassing, or not knowing what to say.
Not being comfortable with your physical appearance or social skills can make one shy. If you think you are fat, dumb, ugly, etc. then you are more likely to be self-concious and shy.
People who have experienced something traumatic may be withdrawn and appear shy. Rape victims, witnesses of crimes, etc.
There are a lot of factors that can make someone shy!

Everyone is different. Not everyone is so straight forward, or out spoken, sometimes, it has to do with insecurities, and when some one compliments you, you are shocked because you're not use to those compliments, and often want to work on keeping those compliments coming by keeping your physical appearance up. It's common though, it either makes you or breaks you.
