Having had rats, mice, squirrels & birds in this house, I'd say it is either rats or squirrels. Purchase a small ottle of Fox Urine from your local feed store or hunting supply store. Spray two or three shots of this(also available in powder form) where you think the scratching is originating from and/or where you are finding evidence. The varmit will leave promptly. Last winter a squirrel tried to nest in our attic & once we sprayed the fox urine he exited quite rambunctiously within minutes & has yet to return. Meanwhile it is safe for other animals(pets & kids)to be around

1/2 " long and black? Yep probably mice, they do sound loud for mice but the p- board amplifies the sound! We had this trouble at the last place we rented after the sale of our house. When i went up into the loft to see what it was (serious I'm not joking) up there was a Squirrels dray(un occupied) Wasp's nest (un occupied) And Mice in residence!! This house was in town i might add not the country!! We were both glad to get out of there in the end!!

Could be Mice or Rats, put a trap down and find out! I wouldn't recommend using poison though because we did that and it went off to die where we couldn't find it and then you don't have to worry about the rat but the flies maggots and smell!!!! mmm Lovely

Mouse droppings are small, squirrel droppings are round, so my guess is its either a rat or and opposum. Dcon should take of either one

most likely rat, but look on the bright side and think mouse!
Put in a trap for both plus poison and see if that solves the problem.
Good luck.
