When I got my new hamster, the lady said not to pet him for about three days to let him get used to his new location. I didn't listen to that, I petted him and held him and played with him and got him out for HOURS the first day, and he didn't seem to mind. In fact, he seemed to be enjoying himself. He was fine. I guess it depends what kind of hamster you have and how much stress he's under at the moment. If yours seems to be scared or skittish, put him back in his cage and leave him alone for a few days, so he can used to where he is now. After that, he should be fine. I've had a lot of hamsters, gerbils, and rats, and they all seem to be fine to be handled right away, but yours might be different.

Well, I have expirience with animals, and most hamsters need to be in their new home/cage for at least 2-3 days before letting them out or petting them. So basically you just leave them be for 2-3 days, but still feed them regularly and give them fresh water too. Hamsters need to adapt to their surroundings before getting out of their cage and having contanct with humans so they won't get stressed, because stress can kill anything, especially little animals like hamsters.

Uhh I wouldn't they are probaly taking time to get used to a new place and you wouldnt want to be petted by a giant if someone picked you up and put you in a box and shipped you in a car and put you in a cage that you could not get out of because you had fluffy munchkin hands that couldnt open anything..
would you? no.
Happy new years,
TIff

It is same with all hamsters. When you first get them, you have to train them - the cage they are in makes no difference.
Good Luck!
P.S. Sorry your other hamster died.

First you might want to try getting him used to you. Just put your hand in his cage, kind of let it sit flat. Maybe rearrange things, etc. So he knows your hand and your smell. After a couple days try giving him treats. I'd wait a week or so of doing this to try to pet him.

Give him time to get adjusted to his new surroundings. Petting him right after bringing him to a new home with new people, sights, sounds etc. can make him nervous, and they can bite when they are frightened. Hope this helps!

That depends, do you like being bit? :) I would give him a little time to get used to his new surroundings. He's had a rough day.
