A paralegal conducts investigations into the facts of a particular case, researches the related laws, both state and federal, drafts and prepares legal documents such as motions, interviews clients, and prepares and maintains files, researches legal strategies, and prepares legal arguments for trials, and initiates litigation. The paralegal is a legal technician. Onet online gives a summary of what exactly a paralegal does.

Does a lot of the legal research and filing that does not require an attorney to complete.

For instance, an attorney is not required if a couple wants to file for divorce. A trained paralegal would know what kind of paperwork needs to be filed and help the couple get quickly throug a non-contested split.

Paralegals also work WITH attornies to do a lot of the "grunt work" that might otherwise take up a lot of time away from the kinds of operations where a real lawyer is needed.

Same thing as a lawyer, only a paralegal can't walk. Just kidding! They are basically legal assistants. They conduct interviews, write memoranda, prepare cases etc.

They do legal research (look up laws and prior cases that may assist their client), draft legal document and internal memorandum (advising the attorney of your legal research finding).....plus much, much more.
