He died on the bank right after the sting ray pierced his heart with his tail.

Steve went into immediate cardiac arrest. He was officially pronounced dead by a doctor in the boat shed situated on Low Isles. (Steve had been taken there from the scene as the best and safest rendezvous for the rescue helicopter).
There was no ambulance as ambulances don't float too well. The rescue helicopter was the only unit that attended.
The comments made by many that he would have lived if he had left the barb in are incorrect. The heart was damaged beyond any surgical repair and was not capable of pumping blood around the body.

He got pierced in the heart by a stingray barb when he was filming a documentary for his 8yr.daughter Bindi.He died on September 4th at the Great Barrier Reef.

I died shortly after the accident happened I would imagine, like as in seconds maybe a minute. He should have never pulled the barb of the stingray out, that just caused his heart to bleed, you know it?

I believe he died instantly. When he pulled out the needle from the stingray fish he died soon after. It was so very sad.

No, he died before the ambulance got there and he may not have died if he would have left the sting ray barb in his chest, but he pulled it out.
