I invested in a battery charger and several sizes of batteries a few years ago......this not only cut down on cost and the environmental issue of batteries , but was great for those annoying noisy toys they get given.........'oh dear the batteries have run out, we will have to recharge them..........that will take 24hours..........' they understood from an early age about batteries and being patient about charging..........we got many 24 hours of peace and quiet and usually found they didnt want the toys when charged as they had a different one to play with.

Most things come with batteries now, don't they.
I suppose if you are feeling cruel, you could open the pressies, take out the batteries, and repack them. But it would be a bit mean!
Would be more cruel to not give your wife batteries with her present!
