Expensive, and rising. I've lived in San Diego/Los Angeles for 25 years. A few years back they added the requirement for 5-gas testing on a dynomometer (putting the engine under road-simulating load). Apparently they decided that not enough cars were failing. Dynomometers are very expensive (about $50,000 each), so the price of a test rose from about $10-20 to about $30-60. In addition, the requirements are very strict, so the number (and cost) of repairs has sky-rocketed. There's no way to quantify the added "screw the customer" factor brought on by extremely high overhead; mechanics just seem to keep getting shadier. Also, "pass or don't pay" used to be all over the place. Now it's extinct--not one to be found anywhere here; you have to pay again every time. At best, some places will give you one free test if you fail the first time.

i do no longer understand the place you reside, yet in Ca. usa there are smog verify places by out the state that look at brakes and lights furnishings. They fee any the place from around $30.00 directly to over $one hundred.00. generally you will come across coupons in newspapers or advert magazines or whilst a sparkling one opens they supply specials.
