Get yourself a standard Stanley whittler( Available at Mountain Heritage Crafters) then personalise the handle with Carved bone or tusk ,Yak or gnu would be fine

And what, praytell are you whittling yams into? Animals? I'd probably use a paring knife. If by whittling you mean pealing, try a vegetable pealer and you'll be sure to only take off the skin.

I like to use a buck knife with a 4 inch locking blade.
