Obviously The Godfather. Great novel. As for non-fiction, try Bound by Honor: A Mafioso's Story by Bill Bonnano.

You can't go wrong with "The Godfather", which would be my first choice, followed by "Serpico" which is the story of an undercover police officer in NYC. Both are available in paperback, so you can get them inexpensively.
