The Democrat Party not only gained the majority in the House but also in the Senate. If they vote as a block, which they don't always do, they will control what what "bills" are passed in the House and in the Senate.
After a bill is passed in either of the 2 branches of Congress, it must go to a commitee that is made up of both Senate and House members and a compromise bill made up. This compromise bill must be passed by both the House and the Senate before it can go to President Bush.
President Bush can either sign the bill, in which case it will become a law; or he can veto it and then it will be returned to the House and the Senate. If 75% of both the House and the Senate vote for the bill, then this over rides the President's veto and it becomes a Law.
The Democrats only have 51% of the Senate and far less than 75% of the house, so they don't have enough members to over ride the President's veto. For this reason, the Democrat Party does not have control of the government of the USA.
The thing that does result from the recent elections is that the President will have great difficulty in getting legistration passed that is congruent with the Republican philosophy. He will also have great difficulty getting his nominees for the Supreme Court and Federal judgeships confirmed.
The other thing that will be difficult for the President in getting his legislation passed is that the commitee chairmen of both the Senate and the House will be Democrats because who is chairman of a commitee is determined by which party is the majority.
The other thing that you have to remember is that when any politician uses the word "reform", it doesn't mean that things will be improved but that the politician wants the voters to "think" that it will improve things.
The last thing to remember is that words influence how people think of things. There is no such thing as "undocumented citizens". For a person to be a citizen of the USA they have to have been born here or they have to have entered the country legally and then go successfuly through a process that ends in Citizenship.
Supporters of "anyone" coming into the country and working here use the term "undocumented workers", because that sounds better that the truth. The truth is that anyone who enters this country illegally is an "illegal alien" which as always been the proper term.
I hopes this helps in your understanding the government we have here.

Yes, it is a new bill by McCain, Kennedy, Flake and Guiterrez that is billed as the Senate Bill but without the must have been here 5 years part.
I am opposed to it because I think the Senate Bill was horrible. I also think the tactic planned is to introduce this the first week of session and call it to a vote saying 'most of this has already been debated' so the newbies have to vote while they are still trying to figure out where the bathrooms are, much less how they can marshall support.
I take it we are on different sides of this issue. However, if they would fix the problem people might be able to look at 'those here' differently. Right now they want open borders PLUS amnesty, essentially. I'm against it.

As much as I hope Tim G is right, I expect this is the one issue they WILL deal with. Bush and the democratic leadership are generally in agreement on giving amnesty.

who the heck knows? the democrats have done nothing but criticize Bush for the past several years, so we don't really know where they stand on most issues. We just know they don't like Bush.
Some people think the dems support mass amnesty for illegals who are currently here. I don't know if they do or not. I think they do, but won't admit it because no one would vote for them.

I have not heard but if they are going to do something I hope it makes it easier for people who follow the rules to get their greencards over illegals. I have been here legally for 7 years and still do not have a greencard!
