Some people in the world are...
ignorant
arrogant
stupid
stubborn
.... and that causes them to compare things to other things without even trying the other.

I don't think people think Taco Bell is authentic. Mexican restaurants that are considerably more authentic are everywhere and when people eat there they know Taco Bell is not authentic. Taco Bell is just a cheap place to eat food that resembles Mexican food when you are really hungry. A long time ago Taco Bell was pretty decent but they figure out ways to make things cheaper and quality goes down. They were alot better long ago. Even so called authentic Mexican food is questionable at times as to their being authentic. What would make a Mexican dish authentic?

I have never heard of anyone calling it authentic, but it's most likely ignorance. Many people have simply never had real mexican food. Taco Bell, it's about as authentic as Panda Express or the Olive Garden. However, it is tasty fast food!

It is true that a lot of people think it is authentic. I know it isn't... anyone who's eaten at a real Mexican restaurant knows there's a freaking difference, but you just can't dictate your palate. EVEN THOUGH Taco Bell is not "authentic," it is still the cheapest fast food you can find, it tastes really good (great ground beef in my opinion), and because it is fast food, it has a certain standard of quality it MUST meet, so it's always the same. Plus, it's convenient. Hell, I personally prefer Taco Bell, cost-wise AND taste-wise, to authentic Mexican food!

I've never considered it "authentic" Mexican food. It's just cheap fast food and a burger alternative. Thankfully my boys are growing out of their Taco Bell phase.

Maybe because they are not of mexican descent or never ate authentic mexican food? Or maybe because they are the only fast food mexican restaurant in most states?

I have never thought it was authentic. For one thing, its mostly American teens that work there. And most fast food restaurants in America are franchised through an American Co-op.
We do have a Chinese restaurant that has not a single China-man there. They are all Mexicans. GO FIGURE

If your not Mexican, you can't possibly know the difference. I'm not Mexican and I know the difference only because I've been to Mexico.
