10 Ways to Fall Asleep

1. Establish a regular routine. Maintain a regular routine that includes going to bed and getting up at the same time every day, even on days off work and on weekends.

2. Go to bed when you are sleepy. If you are unable to fall asleep or stay asleep, leave your bedroom and engage in a quiet activity elsewhere. Try to read a book or watch some TV. Return to bed when - and only when - you are sleepy.

3. Avoid stress and worries at bedtime. Certain activities, such as listening to soft music, reading, or taking a warm bath, are great ways to fall asleep.

4. Use your bedroom only for sleep and sex. Avoid doing other activities in bed like watching TV, paying bills, or working only serve to initiate worries and concerns. Let your mind associate the bed with sleeping, relaxing, and pleasure.

5. Avoid heavy meals late in the evening. While a light snack before bedtime can help promote sound sleep, avoid large meals.

6. Reduce caffeine and nicotine intake. Coffee contains caffeine, as do many teas, chocolate and cola drinks. Caffeine is a stimulant, which means it has an alerting or wake-up effect. Avoid those four to six hours before going to sleep.

7. Avoid drinking alcohol as well. Alcohol, in contrast, is often thought of as a sedative, a calming drug. However, while alcohol may speed the beginning of sleep, it actually increases the number of times you awaken in the later half of the night.

8. Lay off on tomato products and spicy foods. These give many people heartburns (as does eating too fast). Lying down makes heartburn worse, and heartburn itself makes falling asleep more difficult. Heartburn also awakens sleepers with middle-of-the-night discomfort.

9. Avoid napping during the daytime. Avoiding naps all together will ensure that you are tired at night. Longer naps disrupt the body’ ability to stay asleep.

10. Maintain a dark, quiet and cool room to sleep in. Most sleep scientists believe that a slightly cool room and keeping your bedroom dark are great ways to fall asleep. That's because it matches what occurs deep inside the body, when the body's internal temperature drops during the night to its lowest level. In addition, light - strong light, like sunlight - is the most powerful regulator of our biological clock. The biological clock influences when we feel sleepy and when we are alert.

Sugar or carbohydrates can keep you awake, no coffee/tea/caffine after 4pm - they say no carbs after 4pm also, being on the Pc can sort of hypnotise you also. Don't read, watch TV or use a laptop in bed - keep bed for sleeping only. Valerian herb found in tea bag form or tablet form may help you. When I can't sleep I try to just concentrate on my breathing taking long slow breaths and thinking about nothing more but breathing long and slow and next thing I know I am waking in the morning! :) I wear earplugs if any noises are bothering me and this helps you concentrate on your breathing also as it is all you can hear. An eyemask can help if u have any light that gets into your room. Sex with a partner or on your own can work before sleeping but some say that anything that gets the heart rate going can bot help with sleep - try a few of these things if you have not already. Go

I have trouble getting to sleep too. I am tired during the day and when it comes to night time i am wide awake and can stay up all night. I heard that having hot drinks before you go to bed help. Also try not to go on the computer right before bed because staring at a screen isnt good before bed. If you do lots or energetic things during the day then you are usually more tired at night. Swimming for a long time makes me tired and i get to sleep faster if I swim alot. Dont do lots of exercise or anything energetic right before you go to bed because it will make you more energetic for a while and will make it harder for you to sleep at night. I usually find reading books makes me tired unless its a good book. Also sometimes just watching series on dvd's makes me tired if i put it on play all episodes. But again nothing you will get hooked to. Another thing that may sound strange but works is to listen to hypnosis. Download one for sleeping and listen to it. Even during the day if you listen to one (around 20 mins long) after you feel like you slept for ages, so might be good if you havent slept well. U can download some from limewire. Hope some of this helps. Its stuff i remember from when i was looking at how to get to sleep quickly on google.

Is it becos u r stressed? you can try one of these natural tablets(see links for whch one you like) but I think they take a little while to work, but worth checking out.
I've heard from a couple of places putting your feet in cold water rushes all the blood to your feet & so your brain will relax more & you can sleep better.
I've read that the best thing to do is get fresh air (eg. in a park or woods). I find sometimes i can't sleep & I open the window & I sleep soon after.
I have the exact same problem & usually sleep about 3 am but it doesn't bother me as I'm not working. Have you tried counting mississippi ! (joke sorry...!)

Go to a health food store and talk to someone, there are a lot of products that will help you to fall asleep that are carried by a good health food store.
Try calcium tablets, Calms Forte etc. all are non-addictive and should help.
Then there is always a prescription available from your doctor, but they can give you some goofy responses or make you have the munchies.

I wish that I could help you, but the fact is I suffer from the same thing, I tried sleeping tablets for a while but my doctor said that if I stayed on them, I would get addicted, I didn't want that so i came of them, now it's back to sleepless nights !

10 ways to fall asleep is sound advice, but you might want to check your diet for culprets as well to help. Stay away from foods that contain BHA or BHT... they cause hyperactivitie (store bought sausages, hot dogs, cold cuts..etc...), remove aspartame from your diet (also known as Equal or Nutrasweet) they cause nerve irritation that can cause hypertension, depression, anxiety. And stay away from any hydregenated oils, also found to bond to brain tissue and cause hyperactivity.

Make sure you get a minimum of 30 min cardio exercise a day and stick to a sleep schedual. Water will help flush toxins from your body, and does help minimally... and never forget the benefit of warm milk. It contains a natural hormone that makes babies sleep... works on grown ups too.

You aren't wearing yourself out during the day. Get up at the same time every morning -- not matter what time you got to sleep. Start a workout routine during the day (be done a few hours before you go to bed). This will increase your energy during the day and will wear you out to sleep at night.

Sweet Dreams!
