I am an early retiree and live in Southwestern PA. Housing prices are a bargain, compared to other cities. A $450,000 house in San Francisco might sell for $125,000 in Pittsburgh.
Real estate taxes are relatively high. There is no state income tax on pensions. The population in this area has the second highest average age, after St. Petersburg, Florida.
Seniors get free bus fair. PA has a drug payment plan for poor seniors.
We got culture up the wazoo. UPMC has a huge collection of hospitals and other health care facilities near the University of Pittsburgh.
The weather is not perfect. We have a full four seasons.
My total budget for cost of living expenses, including taxes and insurances, and health care is $18,000. It is easy to live cheaply here.

given your age any suggestion given now will be invalid in 15 yrs (you'll be 63).
suggest you do what most people will not do - figure out what you want to do to occupy your time . with that info you can get an idea of some places to go. want to see a lot of places for extended times - get a career that has demand and flexibility.

the way things are shaping i believe you would be very smart to immigrate to australia or new zealand. things are gonna get pretty nasty here in the next 20 years and it will only grow worse. time to go friend.
