Advantages: workers rights are protected and you have a legally recognised advocate to step in for you when they need to.
Why do you think the governments want to get rid of them?

Disadvantages:unions/union members are commonly seen as trouble makers, slackers etc. a lot of this is due to bad press and political spin doctoring but a few have also, in the past, been their own worst enemy especially when you had to be in a Union this has changed since de-regulation.
If you want any more advice go on line to your work sector union. They will be more than happy to assist.

Unions protect the mediocre/ below average worker while ignoring the individual who shows initiative. Everyone is equal, in pay, in recognition, and in dues/ other assessments.

On the other hand, employers get the unions they deserve. By callous mistreatment of employees, by ignoring suggestions, complaints and issues, and by paying lower then area wage rates, an employer puts out the "red carpet" for the union.
