Does anxiety cause people to turn to alcohol?

Because the two are linked.
Alcohol is a drug, it can have benefitial effects in the correct dosage as can any other. People know a drink is relaxing so turn to it if they feel Anxious.
As we find alcohol pleasant we drink more than we need, and for some if one drink is relaxing two must be twice as good.
Anxiety is one of the symptoms of withdrawal (ask any recovering alcoholic) but most people dont know or accept this and so drink more to get rid of the feeling.

Alcohol is a form of self medicating and people with all forms of mental disorders use it as a form of medication because it is affordable, easy to buy, more accepting in society than mental illness and many reasons. Yes, people that suffer from anxiety and depression are the most common abusers of alcohol because it is so easy and available. What most people don't understand is that alcohol only makes depression and other forms of mental disorders worse. The first drink is a mood elivator then it is a depressant itself. People don't see that. They see it as a quick feel good for a few hours and forget about my real problems fix. So, the answer is yes people use it as a way to medicate themselves and not have to deal with any real problems they may have. I think it is one of the worst drugs ever and having it out there is just a death trap as well as a family and home wrecker and turns people into wife and child abusers and neglecters. it is such a bad drug. I don't see how they ever had it made legal. I think marijuanna would be a better choice...so they sit and act stupid and laugh, they never speed, kill people or beat their wives, lol I know it sounds radical but geeeze. It's true.

I totally know how your feeling, i was goin to post a question just before i read this one..and it's ironic because i just lost my job aswell recently :( drinking definatley causes anxiety and depression, well for me anyways..i mean i could go drinking HARD for a week maybe more then i would suffer for like 3weeks..the past year i have been drinkin heavier i suppose but no way i have a problem, i could stop at any time..i recently started sufferin with like my nerves and stuff after drink, even after one night..i'd b really paranoid and panicky and shaky the next day and for a few days after my heart would just start beating really fast and i'd get really shaky and really paranoid.worst feeling ever.i guess the only thing would be to cut down or give up the booze.i shud prob take my own advice 2!

I believe it's all in the blood sugar(mostly). It can be a vicious cycle of craving a drink because your blood sugar is too low,you get anxious, alcohol turns to sugar in the blood stream, then you get incrdibly "high" off this alcohol so quickly that you "crash" and get anxious because your blood sugar is too low,and then you crave the hair of the dog that bit ya and thus starts the vicous cycle of alcohol abuse. I think fluctuating blood sugar levels are the biggest sourceofhealthproblems but this is all a cover up because the government is making too much money off o the food manufacturing companies who create this problem by not caring what they sell you. Chemical crap, simple carbs, low nutrition and we get so chemically imbalanced that all sorts of problems start happening. Stop the madness!

It can do, I suppose. Some people use alcohol to relax. It's a dangerous thing to do though, you can become reliant very quickly.

It can do - but it's a vicious circle as alcohol worsens anxiety

Sad but true :-(
