Does having Windows XP effect overall system performance?

So right no these are my specs:
1022Mb Ram
Nvidia 7800GS (AGP)
P.4 2.80 Ghz
Windows XP (Just never took the time to update)

If you plan to upgrade a windows 98se to XP, make sure you have met or exceeded the requirements, as far as processor speed and RAM, or XP will slow down or even not work. If you are asking will XP run faster? I doubt it makes any difference.
