What are your reactions to the following:

Music has been my life for over 20 yrs.; performing, writing, recording. I have played and appreciated most all forms, from big band, through early rock & roll, then the Beatles and the psychedelic era, then the 70's. The 80's I wasn't too keen on, but there were some solid disco tunes. I've played country, polkas, you name it.
I'm working on my 3rd album of original material.

I've done my fair share of hard rock. I love Pink Floyd, Santana, Cream, some of the Who, some Van Halen.

Now...take a look at how present day upper middle class kids are shuckin', jivin', and pimpin' like the popular rap stars.

I'm not talking about dress fashion.

Somehow, I just don't seem to recall previous generations imitating the personalities of the decade. I don't remember teens imitating Nat Cole, Chuck Berry, Otis Redding, Jimi Hendrix, etc.

BUT

here's all these little white "mall rats" pimpin' like they're gangstas.

What's your take?

Oops, typo. I've been performing for over 40 years.
Sorry - martinis were involved.

39 here. To quote Paul Mooney, "the black man is the most imitated on the planet." They are posing because like Justin they can play their card to get out of trouble. Some of them talk more slang than I do.

First of all, WE did emulate our idols too. I personally remember wearing bandannas tied in various places (a la Jimi Hendrix). I saw lots of girls wearing clothes to look like Janis Joplin in the 70s and Pat Benatar in the 80s (just to name a couple). It has been going on all along!!

That said, I agree that most of these kids look foolish in my eyes, but I'd bet adults thought the same about me in the 70s. Hopefully, they, like me, will grow up and become their own person (find who they really are) as they get older. Meanwhile, I just laugh under my breath at them as I remember my own youth, and as long as they don't perpetrate any of the violence that permeates society today - no harm done.....

I guess it's just a way of expressing themselves.
