The Democrats originated as the party of the agrarians, and centered around expanding America's frontier. They are officially the Democratic-Republican Party, founded by Thomas Jefferson.
The Republicans (Grand Old Party [GOP]) are a party that originally was centered toward urban centers, and the industries which employed them (hence big money corporations).
Both parties have strayed and come back to their roots, but, neither stays there for too awful long. The GOP, however, have aalways seemed to keep the management of Industry and corporate powers as one of their big central issues. (whether as friend or as foe)

It appears to me that they are more alike every day.
What was it Norman Thomas said...
“The difference between Democrats and Republicans is: Democrats have accepted some ideas of Socialism cheerfully, while Republicans have accepted them reluctantly”
Frankly, I'm sick of bipartisanism and being restricted to one or the other in most elections.
As for the presidential candidate it doesn't matter much... you have a choice between a Democratic Rockefeller puppet or a Republican Rockefeller puppet.
...or so the germans would have you believe
bah humbug

Honest to goodness...well I don't rightly know. But what I do know is this whole government corruption is ridiculous. In fact, this entire political dispute is completely and utterly insane. Why on earth DO the republicans and democrats have so many differences. Now I know I am not answering your question, but let me say this: do you think it is right that the average everyday citizens are voting because they THINK their party is better NOT because of what the candidate actually STANDS FOR!?!?! I HATE THE CAPITALIST PIGS OF AMERICA. THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT GOVERNMENT IS SO COMPLETELY CORRUPT. GO LAZZE-FAIR!!!!

Democrats are liberal. They are usually less religious, pro-choice, hate guns, they want bigger government, more taxes, more welfare, less war. Most poor and lower middle class are Democrats.
Republicans are conservative. The are usually religious people, pro-life, love guns, smaller government, less taxes, less welfare, less illegal immigration. Most upper middle and rich people are Republicans.
Of course not every person falls 100% either category. You just have to pick what you care about the most. Or don't pick at all and be independant, but then you can't vote in the primaries.

Democrats: Tend to favor the "working class." Strong supporters of social programs to provide assistance to the needy/poor. Also strong supporters of labor unions (pro "blue collar" citizens, anti-"white collar" citizens/businesses.
/
Republicans: Tend to favor large businesses. Usually out to confront and destroy labor unions which they see as anti-business. Overall attitude summed up in "businesses provide the jobs, therefore they should receive the support."
/
Irony: Republicans responsible for desegregation in the 1960's; however, Democrats have reaped the benefits (voters).
