Because they lack self esteem and have a need to belittle others in order to build themselves up.

My daughter has Down syndrome and it seems as though the children accept her fine. However, I know form personal experience, and study as well (Masters in Psychology) that children are constantly trying to make sure they fit into their "in-group", those that most closely relate to them. Anyone in the "outgroup" will have the possibility of being teased or ignored. Many children do not understand when they see a person with a disability, it is new, intriguing, and scary at the same time. They use their in-group defense in order to make themselves feel more comfortable, by dropping the target to under their level. Basically, it alleviates the fear.

Kids can be cruel. It's just that they haven't grown enough to develop a sense of empathy. They are at the center of their own universe and the world revolves around them. That is part of the magic of being a kid, but it can also lead to uncalled-for meanness. Kids grow up and hopefully lose that cruel streak. Some never do. They are called sadists.

Kids are sometimes mean because they don't know any better or that is what they learn at home. If possible when you encounter a child being mean to another child or anyone that is special try to correct their behavior.....they may want to change but don't know how.

Most people and children that are mean have had a lot of mean things done to them, and very little love in there life"s.They are desperately seeking love or approval to make them feel right. It's a vicious cycle I'm afraid.

Because those kids are mean and think everything is a joke. Don't let them get to you. There is nothing wrong with you. It's them with the problems.

Because they think it props up their own ego and sense of self. Usually these are the kind of people who aren't too sure of themselves at all so they pick on people who they perceive as being "beneath" them and cause great suffering as a result.

Kids are kids. i am not saying all kids tease, but it's a part of life.
Maybe their parents didn't show them or tell them about treating people with respect, and/or if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all! I don't know... but i know they sure a BLUNT!

People being cruel to others is a fact of life. When you learn to not care what others say or think about you, you have mastered your life.

I'm not cynical but in most cases humans are selfish and mean in order to survive. It's our survival instincts that make us mean in general.
