Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music is by far the best program in the nation for musical theatre. However, it is extremely hard to gain admission.

Other top-notch schools:
NYU, Boston Conservatory, University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon.

See the discussion thread below for more information.

I suggest you start by finding out more about the different types of programs out there, and researching a bit about what makes for a strong program in musical theater. An excellent resource for both questions can be found at:

The above site also has a great master list of programs, but you may also want to check out Peterson's undergraduate visual and performing arts search engine:

There is also a book called Creative Colleges that further discusses various programs and gives advice on auditions.

And, if you're planning to apply to musical theater programs, it's also a good idea to read up on the Unified Auditions Day program - these are days across the country when the top MT and theater programs hold joint auditions in various cities around the country. Here's the link: http://www.unifiedauditions.com/

There are many programs out there, but some of the most popular ones with applicants include NYU, Ithaca College, Emerson College, Syracuse, University of Michigan and Arizona State. Like many other MT programs, admissions into these programs is very competive, so if you have your heart set on MT, my advice is to apply widely, and perhaps include some non-audition programs on your list as backups.

I know three of the best are NYU, UCLA, and USC. I believe that Columbia has a strong program too.

Good Luck!!!
