Plants carry out cellular respiration all the time! Just like in our cells that is how the get energy. Plants do not get their energy from photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process plants use to create their own sugars but they still need respiration to break down and derive energy from these sugars. The common misconception that plants carry out cellular respiration only could be related to the fact that part of the photosynthesis cycle (the 'dark' reactions) occur only at night.

All the time.

Plants also require energy to do their own daily work. It is just that during the day, they also photosynthesize, so people misunderstood that they only respire at night.
