Everytime I try to shut off (or restart) my Dell pc running win xp home ed. it goes to a shut down screen and just stays there (like all nite)...I have to manually hold down the power button a few secs for my pc to shut down...this happens every time...any answers??

None of these answers had worked. I research more on the net and found that if i go to "startup and recovery" in the control panel and i selected "none" under the "write debugging information" my pc will shut down or restart now.....hmmm..dunno why though!

Hit CTRL / ALT / DEL to open task manager to see what application or program isn't responding... then close that particular application. You may have to run a registery cleaner type software to straighten it out.

I had a problem like this and eventually (a week or two later) on starting the screen would display autochk not found. Checked many sites, and read that autochk.exe may be corrupted, so deleting the one used and copying another fixed problem.. My XP has four copies .
