According to the obituary (see link below) it was from congestive heart failure while he was hospitalized for pneumonia. God rest his soul.

He had pneumonia and his heart gave out on him. It said in Yahoo Music that his friend was sitting next to him and he said that he knew he was going to die. James then let out a sigh closed his eyes and died. Check out James Brown on Yahoo Music and it'll tell you.

Pneumonia is the number one killer of old people with immuno-compromised systems or other illnesses. That's usually what takes them...especially since they tend to pick up the super bug in the hospitals and they are too weak to fight that and even antibiotics don't help.
