Single ingredient cough mixtures (eg. pholcodine for a dry cough, and guaiphenesin or bromhexine for a chesty cough) are safe while breastfeeding. Avoid cough mixtures that contain pseudoephedrine.
Breastfed myself and mainly stuck to honey and lemon mixes. It is tricky as there's not much research available. Consult a pharmacist if you're worried.

Tylenol is usually safe. I breastfeed and this is what I usually stick with. Or try tea and cough drops menthol chest rub and most definitely a humidifier! Garlic is also a natural antibotic, if I come down with something I usually take the gel caps of garlic oil for 3 days or so. Hope your wife feels better.

I was filling a prescription at Target yesterday and the woman in front of me in line asked the pharmacist almost the same question, she asked about cold medicine, and the pharmacist said that none of them were okay. I'd suggest talking to someone at a pharmacy and seeing what they tell you. Or try something natural, I heard honey works although I've never tried it so I wouldn't know for sure. Good luck!

Very little cough medicine will cross through the milk to your baby. She can take just about anything over the counter. It's when you start getting into the prescription strength stuff that you've got to worry.

I breastfeed my first for 16 months and my second for 7 months and never had a problem with any meds I took. I was even on paxil while nursing. My girls are bright and normal.

try some honey and lemon. in a small cup put some hot water a teaspoon of honey and squeeze some lemon. (after add some cold water or let cool down first, i found out the hard way! Oops!). it helped me when i got a really bad cough at the start of my pregnancy. Congrats on your first child...i'm still waiting for my first, 10days till my due date!
