High sticking is when a player makes contact with another player with his stick. Generally the penalty is called if the stick comes in contact with another players head or face. It is a 2 minute penalty unless the other player is cut; causing blood. Then it is a double minor (or two; two minute penalties) There is also a call of high sticking if a puck is knocked down by a stick above the players shoulders. This is a whistled down play only, and does not result in a penalty. If a high stick is involved in a goal, the goal will be dis allowed. Although I believe the rule books say above the waist; in actual hockey a slash is called for stick contact below the head or neck.

Yes its called for holding the stick above the waist, but its usually only called when the player hits an opponent with his stick that is above the waist (for instance if the stick hits the other player in the face, its pretty blatant high sticking) and not just when a player is holding his stick about his waist. It results in at least a 2 minute minor penalty, if it was accidental contact. If there is blood and/or intent to injure, its often classified as a major and the penalty can be 5 minutes or, at times, a game misconduct. There is also a whistle, but no penalty, when a player hits the puck and his stick is "high." There is then a face-off, but no one goes to the penalty box.

when a player holds the stick above shoulder hight, the blade has to be pointed sideways or upwards or something like that, if you hold it blade down with just your hands above shoulder height, this will not be ruled high sticking. often a high sticking will be followed by slashing or charging or something. for more detailed explanations AND pictures, look in the IIHF rule book! (i think the nhl might have it's own rule book, but i don't really know what the (exact) name of that one is, nor if it's any good, but the iihf rulebook (2006-2010) is good for sure!)

end appearing like it in basic terms takes place to you. on occasion if a ref thinks it replaced into incidental touch they gained't call it. Like if somebody gets hit interior the top with a stick to by way of from a shot, it somewhat is not a penalty. the single on Sedin, Kopitar replaced into looking any other way and replaced into coming to make a transformation. the two crossed each others course and it happened. If Kopitar stored attempting to tug the stick out and shifting around Sedin's head, which would be a penalty. while it happened Kopitar enable bypass of his stick after he found out what happened. in the event that they replaced the rule of thumb to any touch to the top is a penalty, you have gamers taking dives throughout. Bending over to attempting and get hit.
