Yes you can but they prefer rather still water. I use a small sponge filter in all my betta tanks and they work great plus no chance of sucking your poor bettas tail into any filter intakes.

You can put a filter in, absolutely. A filter will reduce the amount of water changes will have to do. Even though some fish (like the betta) are hardy fish, it doesn’t mean that water quality should be neglected. No matter the fish, anything that will improve the water quality is always a good idea.

I have chosen not to use a filter. I got my info. from www.freshaquarium.about.com To the right of the homepage is a most popular subject section and the author explains the best way to keep bettas.

yes you can. they don't need it but it will help you with keeping the tank clean. but remember if it is a male that they will build a bubble nest. so don't buy a pump that is too strong, and also if it is a male you can not put him in with any other fish with long tails or a lot of colors cause they are aggressive. if you plan to breed them keep the male and female separated until you are ready and watch them close. do some research before you try this because there are certain things you need to do. hope this helps.

Yeah you can but when I put mine in a fish tank with a filter he got caught in it and it shredded his tail so I had to put him back in a regular fish bowl.

you don't need to. You do have to change the water often.
