I didn't even bother to check for responses to this but i'm fairly certain it will look like 500 people posting "AHHH COUNTERSTRIKE NOOB!! PWN TEH NOOBSAUCE!!! GHEY lol. roflhaxxor. O, dud, it's chixx." Well...
yeah they may be right :).

IMHO, the FPS match of "what's better" breaks down into exactly what you want to play. Games such as Call of Duty and Counterstrike strive to be 'realistic' and focus more on the team-play aspect. On the other side of the coin, you have games like Quake 4 and the Unreal games, focus on massive ammounts of death and are fairly unrealistic (this is ESPECIALY true in Unreal tournament, which i love). Then, there's also the less known "mmpofps" or "Massivly MultiPlayer Online First Person Shooter." Picture World of Warcraft, but first person shooters. Not free, require a fairly powerful computer, but fun as hell.

From the first group, i'm inclined to agree and say that counterstrike is the funnest for a couple reasons. first, it's cheap. I downloaded Half-life and C/S, so it was ALMOST free... it's free to play online, and there are just massive amounts of people on. However, then changed the game a little bit, so it's not the 'origional' counterstrike, hence why i stopped playing it. That and you have all the C/S kids out there yelling every conceivable l337 phrase out there and calling you 'ghey nub fag haxxor' if you decide to Camp with the awp... which I did... and was damned good at :)

From the second group i wold have to say Unreal Tournament. I loved playing UT when it was out, and i STILL play it (in the form of Totally Unreal) because when it comes to hectic gameplay and frantic triger clicking, you can't beat stuffing 20 people in a room and telling them "last one standing wins." it can get a little "not for kids." but damnit it's still fun.

as far as MMPOFPS, there are only 3 to note: World War II online, PlanetSide, and Neocron. WWII is considered the first, but I think PlanetSide is the best. it's not free to play, but the sheer funness of this game is immesurable. At any 1 time, there are hundreds of people fighting in a war on foot, vehicles, air, etc. It's essentially a capturethebaseandhold it kind of game...but it's HUGE.

All in all, if you odn't want to pay and you're looking for a fun experience where everybody is an idiot, play CS (sorry, CS fans... i'm one too, and you can't deny it). if you want pointless shooting and gratuitous death, TOTALLY pick up 'totally real.' But, as far as mest on line FPS, i throw my vote for PlanetSide. because there's nothing funner than walking with 27 of your buddies into a forest only to realize that the entire server decided to park it's arsenal of tanks there...
...And they don't particularly like the suit you're wearing.

Battlefield 2 I've had since release and I still play it. It's free to play online against up to 63 other people at once in huge battlefields.

It also has a ranking system so you can unlock cool new guns =)

i enjoy the novalogic series Delta Force. friends from work and others get online for free and chase each other around with various weapons. makes it fun when you can talk about your "kills" the next day with people you know.
