As you can see, a proper answer to this question depends upon where you are, and perhaps not just by state, but by locality. It also may depend upon whether the knife is in your pocket. In California, state law does not prohibit the open carrying of any knife except for a switchblade with a blade over 2 inches long, which cannot be possessed at all. (Pen. Code section 653k.) However, it seems to prohibit the concealed carrying of ANY knife, because all knives are "dirks or daggers" under California law. (Penal Code section 12020, People v. Rubalcava (2000) 23 Cal.4th 322.) (I know of no California state law prohibiting the open possession of any knife other than a switchblade.)
However, local ordinances may affect this. For example, in Los Angeles County it is illegal to openly possess any knife with a blade over 3 inches long. (LA Muni.Cd. 55.10.) The result appears to be that there is no manner in which one can legally possess a knife of that length in Los Angeles, since to have it open violates the ordinance, while concealing it violates state law.

each state and each county has different limits.
An illegal knife is defined by PC 46.01 as:

(B) hand instrument designed to cut or stab another by being thrown;

(D) bowie knife;
(E) sword; or
(F) spear.
Prohibited Weapons as defined by PC 46.05 include "Switchblade knives" which is defined in PC 46.01 to mean any knife that has a blade that folds, closes, or retracts into the handle or sheath, and that:
(A) opens automatically by pressure applied to a button or other device located on the handle; or

This varies from state to state..most states allow for a three and a half inch blade as long as it's foldible and locking. In most states any knife that can be opened with one hand, manually or by mechanism, such as a switch blade, is illegal. Most anything double sided is illegal to carry concealed on your person. Check your state laws to stay safe in this area. CCW is a FELONY.
